The average woman over 40 spends significant money on health insurance every year. And for acute care, crisis management, and disease treatment — that investment is genuinely protective. But for the nuanced, complex hormonal terrain of perimenopause — for fatigue, brain fog, weight changes, mood instability, and disrupted sleep that exist below the threshold of diagnosable disease — insurance-based care has a fundamental structural limitation.

How the System Is Built

The conventional medical system is designed around disease. Every service, every test, every intervention requires a diagnosis to justify the expense. This makes sense for acute care. It produces a systematic gap for the woman who is clearly not well but has no diagnosable disease.

“Your labs are normal.” This is not a clinical finding. It is the system communicating that you don’t have a disease it can treat. It says nothing about whether your hormones are optimal, your cortisol rhythm is dysregulated, your thyroid is converting efficiently, or your gut is affecting your estrogen metabolism.

The answer to “normal labs” in conventional care is usually: watch and wait, or pharmaceutical symptom management. Watch the labs annually and wait until something is bad enough to justify treatment. Or suppress the symptoms with medications that address the effect without touching the cause.

What Functional Health Consulting Is

Functional health consulting works from a different premise: the goal is optimal function, not disease absence. The assessment tools go further — functional blood chemistry read against optimal ranges rather than standard ranges, hormone mapping through the DUTCH Complete, gut assessment through the GI Map, inflammatory and immune testing through the ALCAT.

The clinical framework views the body as one integrated system rather than a collection of separate specialties. The treatment approach addresses root causes rather than symptom suppression. And the relationship is a genuine clinical partnership rather than a series of 7- minute appointments.

The Investment Reframe

Functional health consulting is a cash-based practice. This is not a barrier for everyone — but it is a reality that requires a mindset shift for most people raised on the idea that real healthcare is what insurance covers.

The reframe worth considering: the cost of not addressing root causes compounds over time. The decade of perimenopause has outsized influence on bone density, cardiovascular health, cognitive aging, and metabolic function. The woman who navigates this decade with her terrain properly supported emerges differently than the woman who watches and waits.

That’s not a sales pitch. It’s biology. And it’s the reason I built a practice that goes beyond what insurance will fund.
