I built a successful primary care practice because it was what I was “supposed to” do.
I wanted impact. I loved helping people. So I gave everything — my time, energy, attention — believing it was a win-win.
I succeeded on paper.
Hundreds of people benefited.
And, at the same time, I quietly disappeared.
I lived on coffee.
I dreaded mornings and counted down to days off.
By midday my heart felt closed, my mind sharp but exhausted. I rushed through lunch.
By the end of the day, my nervous system was fried — and I kept going anyway.
When the first signs of burnout appeared, I ignored them.
Headaches. Nausea. Fatigue that didn’t resolve. Recovery that took longer and longer.
I was ashamed.
This shouldn’t be breaking me.
So I hid in my work, telling myself I’d earn the care I wanted by getting to the next milestone.
I waited for collapse before letting anyone in.
Burnout stripped so many false identities away.
It taught me how much life matters – that I want to be here, present, alive and connected.
Healing took time. And the most important part wasn’t what I added — it was what I let go of.
Turning toward longevity changed everything.
Not as another demand — but as a way of building a life that asks me to slow down, to savor, to fully be in my body.
When I’m gone, none of the external metrics will matter.
What will matter is how present I was.
How real I was with the people I love.
